Crystal vs Himalayan Singing Bowls: What’s the Difference?

The HEALIVERSE team·Oct 26, 2026·3 min read

In a HEALIVERSE sound bath you’ll hear two main kinds of bowls: clear white crystal bowls and metal Himalayan bowls. Both are called singing bowls, but they sound, play and feel quite different. Here’s a quick guide.

Crystal singing bowls are made from fused quartz and give a pure, long, almost single-note tone. Himalayan singing bowls are made from a bronze alloy and give a warm sound with many layered overtones.

It starts with the material

Crystal bowls are made from quartz sand heated to very high temperatures. They come out milky white or clear, sometimes with minerals added for colour. Each bowl is usually tuned to a specific note, so players can combine several into a harmonic set.

Himalayan bowls are metal, either hand-hammered or cast, and associated with Nepal and Tibet. Because they are handmade, each bowl has its own voice, and it’s rare to find two that sound exactly the same.

How do they feel to listen to?

Guests often describe crystal bowls as a wave of light passing over them, especially when several ring together. Himalayan bowls are felt more in the body: when the facilitator places a bowl near your belly or back and strikes it gently, you can feel the vibration spread.

Neither is better. At HEALIVERSE, a session usually uses both, along with gong and harp, so the sound is both clear and warm.

Research on singing bowls is still limited. A 2020 systematic review (Stanhope and Weinstein) concluded there isn’t enough evidence yet to recommend bowls as a therapy. Treat a sound bath as a relaxation experience, not a medical treatment.

Which should you start with?

  • To relax: join a group sound bath and hear both before deciding which sound you like.
  • To learn: pick crystal bowls if you love multi-bowl harmony, Himalayan bowls if you like working close to the listener’s body.
  • To buy for home: Himalayan bowls are sturdier for beginners. Crystal bowls need a safe, stable spot.

Are crystal bowls really made of quartz?

Most crystal bowls used in sound healing are made from fused quartz sand. Some have minerals or metals added for colour. When buying, ask about the material and the note of each bowl.

Are Himalayan bowls the same as temple bells?

Not quite. Himalayan singing bowls are metal bowls resting on a cushion, played by rubbing or striking. Today they’re widely used for meditation and relaxation.

Can singing bowls cure illness?

No. A sound bath is a relaxation experience. If you have a health concern, please see a doctor, and let the facilitator know if you’re pregnant, have epilepsy or are sensitive to loud sounds.

Can I learn to play both?

Yes. HEALIVERSE runs in-person Crystal Singing Bowls and Himalayan Singing Bowls courses in small groups, with most of the time spent practising.
