Buying Your First Crystal Singing Bowl: 6 Things to Know
After a few sound baths, many people want a crystal bowl at home to relax or meditate. But facing a row of white bowls that all look alike, how do you choose? Here are six things to know before you buy.
Six things to know
- Purpose. For relaxing at home, one bowl is enough. If you want to practise harmony or lead sessions, think about a set of 3 to 7.
- Size. Bigger bowls sound deeper, ring longer and weigh more. Smaller bowls travel easily and sound higher and brighter.
- Note. Each bowl usually has one note. No note is better than another, so pick the one that feels best to you.
- Frosted or clear. Frosted bowls are the most common, with a fuller sound. Clear bowls are lighter, often have a handle, and sound brighter.
- Mallet and O-ring. Rubber and suede mallets sound different. A rubber O-ring keeps the bowl from sliding and knocking.
- Listen and inspect. Tap gently, rub the rim and check the sound is even. Look closely at the rim and base for cracks.

Caring for your bowl
- Rest the bowl on its O-ring on a stable surface, away from table edges.
- Don’t strike it hard with anything solid, and don’t let two bowls knock together.
- Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh cleaners.
- Use a padded bag or case when travelling.
- Keep it out of reach of small children and pets.

Which note should a beginner choose?
There’s no required note. Listen to a few and choose the one that feels most pleasant. If you later practise harmony, a teacher can suggest notes that work together.
Can I buy online?
Yes, but if you’re in Ho Chi Minh City, visit the showroom at 104/20 Mai Thi Luu to listen before choosing.
Are crystal bowls fragile?
Yes. They can break if dropped or knocked hard. With an O-ring and careful handling, they last a very long time.
